CAPACITY AS A ‘-’ PERFORMANCE CATALYST ‘ENERGY’ AS A CATALYST FOR NEGATIVE PERFORMANCE Energy can act as a negative catalyst for performance when it is misdirected, excessive, or poorly regulated. While enthusiasm and drive can be valuable, too much uncontrolled energy may lead to impulsive action, rushed decisions, and a lack of focus. Individuals may move quickly from task to task without fully thinking through the consequences of their actions. High energy without discipline can also create disruption within a team. Someone who constantly pushes for movement or change may overwhelm others, interrupt processes, or create unnecessary urgency. This can lead to mistakes, miscommunication, or frustration among colleagues who require time to analyse, plan, or execute work carefully. In some situations, excessive energy can also appear as impatience. The individual may struggle with slower decision-making processes, detailed work, or collaboration that requires listening and reflection. As a result, their pace may outstrip the team’s ability to coordinate effectively, reducing overall performance. In these cases, the issue is not the presence of energy but the absence of control and direction. When energy is not balanced with judgment and focus, it can create noise and disruption rather than productive momentum. Questions to assess whether energy is acting as a negative catalyst: 1. Does the individual move so quickly that mistakes or incomplete work become more frequent? 2. Does their pace or urgency create pressure, confusion, or disruption for others on the team? 3. Do they struggle to slow down, reflect, or listen before taking action? E N E R G Y ‘ - ’ Better The Deck AS A ‘DRIVER’ FOR NEGATIVE PERFORMANCE
