CAPACITY AS A ‘-’ PERFORMANCE CATALYST ‘MENTAL HORSEPOWER’ AS A CATALYST FOR NEGATIVE PERFORMANCE Mental horsepower can become a negative catalyst for performance when strong cognitive ability is not balanced with focus, judgment, or collaboration. Individuals with high mental capacity may overanalyse situations, becoming caught in complexity rather than moving toward practical action. This can slow decision-making and create unnecessary complication in situations that require clarity and momentum. In some cases, individuals may rely too heavily on their intellectual ability and undervalue input from others. They may dominate discussions, dismiss simpler solutions, or struggle to communicate ideas in ways that are accessible to the broader team. When thinking becomes overly abstract or detached from practical outcomes, it can reduce the effectiveness of both the individual and the group. High mental horsepower can also lead to impatience. If someone processes information much faster than others, they may become frustrated with the pace of collaboration or overlook the importance of bringing others along in the thinking process. Instead of strengthening team performance, their capability may create disconnect or confusion. In these situations, the challenge is not a lack of intelligence but the way it is applied. Without discipline, focus, and collaboration, strong cognitive ability can complicate problems rather than help solve them. Questions to assess whether mental horsepower is acting as a negative catalyst: 1. Does the individual overcomplicate problems or delay decisions through excessive analysis? 2. Do they dismiss input from others or struggle to explain their thinking in a practical way? 3. Does their approach create confusion or slow progress rather than helping the team move forward?
