CRAFT AS A ‘-’ PERFORMANCE CATALYST ‘METHODS’ AS A CATALYST FOR NEGATIVE PERFORMANCE Methods can act as a negative catalyst for performance when they are applied too rigidly or without consideration for the situation. When individuals rely strictly on established methods, they may follow steps mechanically rather than thinking critically about whether the approach is still appropriate. This can limit flexibility and reduce the ability to respond effectively to new or complex challenges. In some cases, methods that were once effective may become outdated as circumstances change. If individuals continue using the same approach without reviewing its relevance, the method may produce inefficient or ineffective results. Work can become slower, more complicated, or disconnected from the real needs of the task. Overly detailed or restrictive methods can also discourage initiative. When people feel bound by procedures, they may hesitate to experiment with better approaches or suggest improvements. This can reduce innovation and prevent teams from adapting their ways of working. In these situations, the issue is not the existence of methods but the way they are used. When methods are treated as fixed rules rather than practical guides, they can restrict thinking and limit performance. Questions to assess whether methods are acting as a negative catalyst: 1. Are individuals following methods rigidly even when the situation requires adaptation? 2. Do existing methods slow work down or create unnecessary complexity? 3. Do people feel discouraged from improving or questioning established ways of working? M E T H O D S ‘ - ’ Better The Deck AS A ‘DRIVER’ FOR NEGATIVE PERFORMANCE
