CRAFT AS A ‘-’ PERFORMANCE CATALYST ‘TECHNIQUE’ AS A CATALYST FOR NEGATIVE PERFORMANCE Technique can act as a negative catalyst for performance when individuals rely too heavily on familiar ways of working without adapting to the demands of the situation. When technique becomes rigid or habitual, people may apply the same approach repeatedly, even when the task requires a different method or level of thinking. In some cases, individuals may focus narrowly on executing a technique rather than understanding the broader purpose of the work. This can lead to technically correct actions that fail to produce the desired outcome because the context or objective has not been fully considered. Overemphasis on technique can also limit growth. If individuals become comfortable with a particular way of doing things, they may resist learning new methods or improving their approach. This can slow development and reduce the ability to respond to evolving standards or challenges. In these situations, the issue is not technique itself but over-reliance on it. When technique is applied without reflection or adaptation, it can constrain thinking and prevent individuals from achieving the best possible results. Questions to assess whether technique is acting as a negative catalyst: 1. Does the individual rely on familiar techniques even when the situation requires a different approach? 2. Do they focus on executing a method rather than understanding the broader purpose of the task? 3. Are they reluctant to refine or change their techniques when better approaches become available?
