CHARACTER AS A ‘-’ PERFORMANCE CATALYST ‘RESILIENCE’ AS A CATALYST FOR NEGATIVE PERFORMANCE Resilience is generally viewed as a positive quality, but when it is misapplied it can also act as a negative catalyst for performance. In some cases, individuals interpret resilience as simply pushing through difficulties without reflection or adjustment. This can lead to persistence in ineffective approaches, where the person continues working hard but fails to improve outcomes. Over-reliance on resilience may also cause someone to ignore warning signs such as fatigue, declining quality of work, or repeated setbacks. Instead of stepping back to reassess the situation, they may double down on effort. Over time, this can lead to burnout, frustration, and diminishing performance. In organisational settings, misplaced resilience can prevent learning and adaptation. If individuals believe they must always endure challenges without seeking support or reconsidering their approach, opportunities for improvement may be missed. The result is that resilience becomes endurance without learning, which can limit effectiveness rather than strengthen it. Questions to assess whether resilience is acting as a negative catalyst: 1. Does the individual continue using the same approach despite repeated setbacks or poor results? 2. Are they reluctant to seek help, feedback, or alternative perspectives when facing difficulty? 3. Is their persistence leading to fatigue, frustration, or declining performance rather than improvement? R E S I L I E N C E ‘ - ’ Better The Deck AS A ‘DRIVER’ FOR NEGATIVE PERFORMANCE
